September 17-19 • Hotel del Coronado, San Diego
2017 Page Society Annual Conference

Walter Cronkite’s old sign off, “And that’s the way it is,” evokes real nostalgia to many Americans of a certain age.  Today, no longer is there someone presiding over the shared experience of an evening news broadcast that brings us together -- regardless of political beliefs or station in life.  All across the globe a shrinking middle class, growing income inequality and a breakdown of local communities have contributed to a growing sense of alienation and division. These fractures are exacerbated by media echo chambers and tech-enabled long tails which breed silos and impede interaction between people who have differing worldviews. Paradoxically, technological advancements that empower connection at the click of a button also contribute to a growing sense of isolation. In the face of profound and accelerating change, the basic need for true human connection, belonging and meaning has never been greater. This conference will explore the concept of community through a variety of perspectives,  with a focus on what leaders and communicators can do to facilitate an open dialogue, build understanding and forge connection.
